Arizona Road Trip #1: Take Route 66
One of Arizona’s most popular road trips is the Route 66 trip. It’s a straight shot across the state, but don’t worry; it’s far from boring. You’ll find a unique combination of the old west during your drive, as well as kitschy, mid-century attractions. Plus, you’ll drive through several of Arizona’s coolest towns, including Winslow and Flagstaff. (Winslow is the town that inspired the Eagles classic song Take It Easy. You can stand on the corner there if you like.)
The trip typically takes about 3 days and covers 260 miles. Some of the highlights include Petrified Forest National Park and that corner in Winslow, AZ. There are abandoned towns, the Painted Desert, and plenty of old-timey diners, too. (Mr. D’s Route 66 Diner in Kingman is a standout.)
#2: Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon
Starting any adventure with the Grand Canyon as your destination is exciting. Starting in Sin City? Well, that’s just icing on the cake! Once you’re on the road, the first stop is the engineering marvel that is the Hoover Dam. You’ll pass through Seligman, AZ, the inspiration for the town of Radiator Springs in the Disney movie Cars. The Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum is along the route, too, and well worth a stop.
This Arizona road trip is just under 300 miles and should take between 3 to 5 days if you take it slow and stop along the way. One recommendation; to avoid the Grand canyon crowds, take this road trip in November.
#3: Navajo Country to Monument Valley
If breathtaking geography is what you and your crew want to see most, this is the road trip for you. The journey starts in Flagstaff, one of Arizona’s loveliest towns. From there, you’ll head to Monument Valley and the incredible rock formations waiting there. Next, take a short detour to go to Four Corners Monument. It’s the only place in the United States where you can be in 4 states at once! (Those would be Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.)
However, one of the best features of this road trip is the indigenous sites you’ll see. For example, Canyon de Chelly National Monument offers a glimpse at 5,000 years of indigenous civilization. The historic Hubbell Trading Post is along the way, also. They’ve been selling indigenous art crafted by local artisans for almost 150 years.
#4: The Classic Cars Road Trip Through Arizona
One thing about Arizona is that, as it’s always dry and hot, cars last a very long time. (Rock salt and the saltwater from the Pacific and Atlantic don’t get a chance to destroy them.) That makes Arizona the perfect place to explore if you love classic automobiles because they’re everywhere! You’ll start on Route 66 then take a hard turn southward. A stop in Tucson is a must as there are 50 classic cars all over the city. (It was a marketing idea back in the 1950s and a classic story of American ingenuity)
The Classic Cars Road Trip is one of the longer road trips, no doubt, at 600 miles. You’ll need 4 to 6 days to finish unless you take your time. The end of the trip takes you to Bisbee, AZ, where there are classic cars everywhere you look. There are even some classic buses along the way, making it a must-do if you love classic vehicles.
#5: The Colorado River Road Trip
The thing about this road trip is that few people know about it, even though it’s genuinely fantastic. Some of the big highlights include the original London Bridge and the fantastical western town of Wickenburg, AZ. (Dude ranches, team roping, and clean air? Yes, please!) At just under 400 miles, this trip takes you past the mighty Colorado River. (We highly suggest stopping to enjoy one of the beaches and get in some camping!)

#6: The Sedona and Central Arizona Road Trip
If a bit of everything extraordinary Arizona offers is what you desire, this is the road trip for you. It’s got history, breathtaking scenery and a bunch of charming small towns to visit. You’ll pass Montezuma Castle National Monument and its unique cliff dwellings. Then, things really get interesting as you get closer to Sedona and its incredible scenery. (Make sure to stop in at Red Rock Visitor Center just outside Sedona.) One of the highlights of this road trip is the Verde Valley and the delicious wine made there.
